Residential Security Tips

  • Sleep with your car’s remote next to the bed.  Press the panic button to sound the car’s alarm if you suspect someone is attempting to break into your car or home.
  • New home? Rekey all exterior locks. Previous owners may have given duplicate keys to a cleaning service, real estate agents, family members, etc.
  • Reinforce strike plates on exterior door frames. To reinforce strike plate, replace screws with 3 inch long wood screws.
  • Install deadbolts on all exterior doors. Make sure they work properly.
  • Install double cylinder deadbolts on exterior doors that are adjacent to glass panes.  Keep the key near the door, but not close enough to access if the glass is broken.  Make sure family members know where the key is located in case of fire.
  • Patio doors? Place pipe that is same length as track in the track.
  • Keep garage door closed.
  • Cut shrubbery around doors and windows.
  • Get a dog.
  • Install alarm system with exterior sirens.
  • When away from home create the illusion someone is home:
    • TV on
    • lights on timers
    • motion Detectors -exterior and interior
    • turn down ringer on phone
    • ask a trusted person to pick up mail and newspaper
  • Install smoke detectors with long-life lithium battery.  Lithium batteries last up to 10 years & cost under $20
